At Riverlock, we’re more than experts in kiwifruit production, packing, cool storage, and orchard management - we’re growers, just like you.
We're growers,
just like you.
Our roots run deep, back to a time when diversification into kiwifruit in the 1970s presented a bold opportunity. When faced with the challenge of finding a reliable packhouse, we did what growers do best: we rolled up our sleeves, built it ourselves, and never looked back. That same resilient, “do-it-yourself" Kiwi determination continues to shape who we are today. We’ve embraced technology at every turn, using innovation to enhance our processes, overcome challenges, and keep pushing forward. With every step, we’re proving that the little guy - with the right tools and spirit, can take on the big corporates and thrive.
As growers, we understand what it feels like to wake up before dawn, checking weather reports and hoping for the perfect crop. We know the pride that comes from a great harvest - and the heartbreak when things don't go as planned. That’s why we treat your fruit like it’s our own, handling every vine, every tray, and every step of the process with meticulous care and dedication.
For us, success is personal. When you thrive, so do we. That’s why we keep things simple: direct communication, honest relationships, and doing what we say we’ll do. With a proven track record and grower-driven expertise, we partner with you to navigate the complexities of kiwifruit production, from orchard to market, so you can focus on what you do best - growing.
We’re not a big corporate; we’re local, community-rooted, and proud of our humble beginnings. Our results speak for themselves, because at Riverlock, actions always speak louder than words.
Whether you're a grower or part of our team, you're never just a number here - you're family. We believe in creating an environment where hard work is recognised, careers thrive, and everyone feels proud to be part of something meaningful.
At Riverlock, we’ll never forget what drives us: the land we nurture, the people we care for, and the industry we grow together. We’re not just in this business - we live it, grow it, and thrive with it - just like you.

What do you think makes Riverlock different?
Although one of the smaller orchard and post-harvest businesses in the New Zealand kiwifruit industry, Riverlock consistently delivers excellent results in orchard production and post-harvest fruit management for its growers. A smaller grower base offers a distinct advantage in that across the business members of the team are in part involved in the entire kiwifruit season for each grower, from growing through to exporting. The team knows the fruit intimately and genuinely cares for it. Riverlock’s willingness and agility to invest in post-harvest infrastructure, embracing new technologies with support a skilled team, enables the company to achieve results beyond what would typically be expected from a smaller post-harvest operator.
If you could describe Riverlock in three words, what would they be?
Where kiwifruit matters.

Our History
A history of resilience, growth
and success
Riverlock’s story began in 1945, when Jimmy Brown’s father purchased a 80 acre farm block in Ōpōtiki. At 22 Jimmy joined him, creating a legacy of hard work, resilience, and a deep connection to the land.
Transitioning from farming sheep to milking cows, Jimmy and his wife Hilda built more than a farm… they built a locally-owned family business with community at its heart and a clear vision for the future.
Through floods, expansion, and diversification into kiwifruit in the late 70s, the Riverlock team has always forged its own path. Growing from a modest block running sheep to a 1000 hectare dairy platform milking 3000 cows, they have become a leading kiwifruit operation in the Eastern Bay of Plenty packing 3 million Class 1 export TEs.
Still proudly family-owned, Riverlock continues to grow with the same pioneering spirit that started it all.
"Never be afraid
to have a go"
-Jimmy Brown

Innovation and Technology
At Riverlock, we’ve embraced technology at every turn - investing in state-of-the-art systems that enhance our processes, improve efficiency, and set new standards in the industry. Innovation drives us forward, helping us overcome challenges and deliver smarter, more sustainable outcomes every season.
Our investment in technology is more than just staying current. It’s about improving efficiency, productivity and outcomes for our growers.
At Riverlock, we’ve integrated advanced systems to ensure every part of our operation is as accurate and efficient as possible. Our carton handling system is seamlessly linked to next-available-drop capability on our grader, which features the latest optical grading technology with the Globalscan 7 from Maf Roda, ensuring precision at high speed.
To streamline packing, we operate two Niverplast bag inserters and a Niverplast tuck and closing machine, significantly increasing packing efficiency and consistency. We also utilise four Kenntec auto packers for layered packs, and we’re currently trialling additional Maf Roda CPS equipment for automated stacking and labelling of packed product.
It’s all part of our commitment to smarter automation, better product handling, and delivering results that our partners can count on.
Sponsorship & Community Engagement
At Riverlock, we’re proud of our local roots and community spirit. So we actively support local initiatives, sponsorships, and events. Whether it’s team-building or giving back, we’re committed to growing stronger together.
Riverlock has a proud history of supporting our local community,
believing that strong local ties help build a stronger industry. For over 20 years, we were a founding sponsor of the iconic MOTU Challenge. This much-loved event brought the community together and showcased the spirit of our region. While the event has now been retired, we remain committed to supporting initiatives that make a real difference locally.
Riverlock is also a founding member of the Opotiki Kiwifruit Growers Community Fund, which provides funding assistance to a wide range of deserving local projects from sports uniforms for local teams to Outward Bound scholarships that help empower Opotiki youth.
We look forward to identifying new opportunities where our support can continue to create meaningful impact.
Environmental Initiatives
At Riverlock, our journey toward environmental sustainability is well underway.
We’ve introduced recycling systems for waste cardboard and plastic from our packhouse operations, helping to reduce landfill waste. In our Coolstore developments, we've taken deliberate steps to minimise our environmental footprint by moving away from CFC refrigerants and adopting glycol-based systems. Recently, we’ve also built our most advanced Coolstore yet, featuring Carbon Dioxide (CO₂) refrigeration technology, which provides a significantly lower environmental impact while maintaining optimal performance.
These initiatives reflect our commitment to making smarter, more sustainable choices for the future.
Why should you choose us?
We're growers too.
